April is all a-bat bats!
April 1st is the official start of bat season! As the days get longer and warmer bats come out of their winter torpor to feed on the spring’s crop of flying insects.
Learn more about these fascinating mammals, their biology, and their role in the environment with Nicole Nolan, a terrestrial ecologist who has been doing acoustic monitoring of bats throughout the Ottawa area for the past five years.
Nicole will kick things off with an introductory webinar on April 1 and every Friday after that she’ll lead a bat walk in one of two local parks where you might get a chance to see and hear the first active bats of the year with the help of an ultrasonic microphone.

NOT YOUR AVERAGE SCAVENGER HUNT
Monday, March 14th and Friday, March 18th, 1 pm - 3:30 pm
Carlington Woods
FREE! Snacks, Drinks and Prizes
Calling all students
Unlike a traditional scavenger hunt with clues and specific items to find, a sensory scavenger hunt puts you in charge. It’s all about finding things you can SEE, SMELL, FEEL or HEAR.
The hunt will take place in Carlington Woods, a 22-hectare urban forest. On the day, we’ll give you the broad categories and some suggestions on what to look for, and then you’ll have the opportunity to explore!
You’ll need to be creative and record your observations with photographs, videos, poems or songs, artwork made from natural materials or trash, imitating birds or animals or by coming up with your own ways.
To register:
Send an email to CarlingtonHampton@gmail.com or scan the QR code. Provide your name, email address, telephone number and any dietary restrictions you have.
You can register as a team (max 4 people) or an individual. All participants will be put into teams of at least 3 people.
GREAT FUN. GREAT PRIZES.
And, if you don’t want to take part but need volunteer hours, we’ve got a job for you! Email to find out more.

JOIN AND BE INSPIRED
The pandemic has changed many things, including the way we get together in person, but the human need to connect—to share personal histories, cultures, ideas—is so strong that we will always find a way.
As part of its Healthy Woods, Healthy People project, Tree Fest Ottawa and community partners were pleased to host Indigenous storyteller, artist, and botanist Matricia Bauer of the Warrior Women collective for an afternoon of storytelling, songs, and more.
Based in Jasper, Alberta, Matricia brings more than 20 years of experience sharing her culture and art in schools and at national conferences.
We may be separated by geography, by culture or by any number of other differences, but Matricia reminds us of what we all share.
“We have to remember that we have more in common than our differences and one of those commonalities is the heartbeat,” she says. “Not only do we have a heartbeat, but trees have a heartbeat, flowers have a heartbeat, and Mother Earth has a heartbeat. That reminds us that we’re all living things and that we’re all tied together. When we think of the world as a living thing with a heartbeat, we treat it differently.”
Tree Fest Ottawa would like to thank the Storytellers of Canada for connecting us with the Warrior Women collective.
Tree Fest Ottawa’s Healthy Woods, Healthy People project is made possible by the generous funding of the Government of Canada through the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative.
