HEALTHY WOODS, HEALTHY PEOPLE

September 2021

Tree Fest Ottawa is excited to announce the launch of a new project - Healthy Woods, Healthy People. Together with local community groups, including Friends of Hampton Park, Friends of Carlington Woods and Comité de l’arbre et des boisé de Manoir des Trembles, we are piloting community-based co-stewardship in three urban forests - Hampton Park and Carlington Woods in Ottawa and Champlain Forest in Gatineau.

These urban woods feature a diversity of mature trees, plants and other species. However, all three are under threat from invasive species, trampled vegetation, and a lack of on-the-ground, coordinated and ongoing stewardship. Without additional care and attention, these woods will not survive for future generations.

Over the next year, we’ll engage local residents, especially those who have been disproportionately affected by the pandemic, through community programming and stewardship activities as a way to build healthy, resilient communities.  We’ll be working closely with the National Capital Commission, the City of Ottawa and the City of Gatineau to coordinate activities, share information and document our work.

Our Healthy Woods, Healthy People project is made possible by the generous funding of the Government of Canada through the Canada Healthy Communities Initiative.

HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR 2019 FALL TREE FESTIVAL AT LANSDOWNE PARK

On September 29th and October 6th, we hosted our annual fall tree festival. The festival took place at Lansdowne Park by the lovely Civic Gardens. Thank you to everyone who came out to take part in activities, lead workshops, and engage in discussions related to the importance of a healthy, diverse and expansive urban forest.

We’re grateful to the City of Ottawa for their collaboration and the support from the TD Environmental Leadership Program through the University of Ottawa’s Michaëlle Jean Centre for Global and Community Engagement.

Here are some highlights of the festival, in photos. Enjoy!

HIGHLIGHTS OF OUR 2018 FALL TREE FESTIVAL IN BREWER PARK

On September 22nd and 23rd, Tree Fest Ottawa hosted its third annual tree festival in Brewer Park, by the pond. The festival brought together neighbours and the wider community with tree experts, activists, forest therapy guides, academics and technicians for a weekend of discovery on the wonders and importance of trees, wetlands, green spaces and the benefits of a healthy urban forest.

A big THANK YOU to all of the incredible workshop leaders, guides and volunteers who gave their time and shared their experience and expertise.

We are also grateful for the support of the City of Ottawa through the Community Environmental Projects Grant Program (CEPGP).

Below are some festival highlights - in photos (by Tree Fest Ottawa).
